John G. Christensen, MD, FACS

Urologist located in Wheaton, IL & Geneva, IL

About Dr. Christensen

Dr Christensen was raised in Wheaton and is the founder of Illinois Urological Institute. With years of experience in major and complex Urological surgeries and procedures, his focus now is on minimally invasive and innovative treatments that require specific expertise and are not universally available.

Dr Christensen was designated as a UroLift Center of Excellence in April 2020. This reflects Dr Christensen’s advanced experience with this technique.

Current areas of clinical focus:

Urolift for BPH. Certified Center of Excellence

“I started doing Urolift early on and am proud to be a certified Center of Excellence. I am particularly excited about the excellent results we are seeing with this revolutionary procedure for men with enlarged prostate - we’re getting even better results than the original FDA published studies - and we are doing this procedure comfortably in the office setting. We are finding out that long term medications for BPH may not be as good as we thought, with more risks than we thought, so men today are fortunate to have Urolift available to them - such a simple option that has been proven to work so well and without sexual side effects”

Mona Lisa Touch for vaginal atrophy

“Vaginal atrophy can cause recurrent urinary infections, overactive bladder and incontinence, and painful intercourse. This innovative, painless, and safe office procedure has provided wonderful relief for our patients”

Botox for Overactive Bladder

“Many patients are not even aware of the full range of advanced treatment options for Overactive Bladder until they come here. Besides Botox we also offer Pelvic Floor Rehab, PTNS, and Interstim or Axonics implantable nerve stimulators”

No-Scalpel Vasectomy

“I use an added technique of tissue interposition, which can significantly decrease the chance of vasectomy failure, plus reduce post op swelling. With over 30 years of refinement in technique, my patients typically do not feel any pain during the procedure, and drive themselves home. We also have nitrous oxide for patients who simply prefer sedation.”

Microscopic Vasectomy reversal

“I was fortunate to have extra training in microscopic surgery, which means a vas reversal is only about a 90 minute procedure, which saves on cost”

Female Stress Incontinence

“I typically use the single incision mini-sling ... a band-aid sized sling placed via a single half inch incision, which has been as effective as the much larger slings using 8-9 inches of mesh that many surgeons still use, but with much less risk and post op discomfort. Patients are often amazed at being dry the same afternoon after such a minimally invasive procedure”

Dr Christensen is available for consultation and treatment for adult Urological issues and will offer either the most up to date care or guide patients to the best referral options when needed.

Education:

BS Chemistry, University Illinois Urbana, Highest Honors (Summa Cum Laude), Phi Beta Kappa
MD, University of Illinois
Urology Residency, Chief Resident, Wake Forest University, North Carolina
Board Certified - American Board of Urology
Fellow, American College of Surgeons
Center of Excellence - Urolift
