What is Hematuria? Hematuria means blood in the urine. It is not a disease but it can be a sign of one. The presence of blood in the form of red blood cells (RBCs) can indicate the possibility of a serious disease within the urinary tract. The urinary tract consists of the kidneys, which make urine; the ureters, which transport the urine to the bladder; the bladder, which stores the urine; and the urethra, which passes it out of the body. In the male, it also includes the prostate (the gland in males that produces fluid for sperm). Hematuria is described as gross if the urine is red or rust colored or microscopic if the urine is yellow and clear because the amount of blood is so small that it can be seen only under a microscope.
